As part of her trip to Owerri, Emily Nkanga, a Nigerian photographer documented an examination of ear infections in students and children in Owerri. According to Emily:
80% of hearing loss in Owerri is found in mostly females, occurring in the left ear. FROM VIOLENCE. Slaps and blows by right handed relatives and guardians
– 10% is caused by opportunistic infections left untreated due to lack of funds and illiteracy (one parent used urine in her daughter’s ears)
– About half of them currently have foreign bodies lodged in their ears, mostly matches.
– Virtually all of them have not been examined by a ear, nose and throat specialist
