Its popular belief that to be truly good at something, you ought to receive some form of formal training from one institution or the other. Some people, however, even without doing so, excel in their fields either by natural talent or by learning on their own. It’s often common to find artists that did not receive any specific formal training in the actualization of their art doing exceedingly well and sometimes even better than those artists who trained extensively.
Data Oruwari, an accomplished Nigerian artist who works out of 3 countries, shares her thoughts on the issue:
“I think if anyone feels they have a lot of talent, I say they express themselves by themselves you don’t need a degree, art isn’t something you get grades for, art is something that comes from you. So I think anybody who just wants to, should go for it by themselves, discover by yourself make your own mistakes, find yourself.”
