Yesterday, the nominees of the 89th Academy Awards (Oscars) were announced and once again, no African film nominated in the ‘best foreign language film’ category
You might begin to think; “Are they good enough”? If you are thinking that, here is a list of 2016 African films submitted for ‘Best Foreign Language Film’ Category and their IMDB ratings;
Algeria – ‘The Well’ [imdb: 8.9]
Cameroon – ‘Yahan Ameena Bikti Hai’ [imdb: nil]
South Africa – ‘Call Me Thief’ – [imdb: 8.4]
Tunisia – ‘As I Open My Eyes’ – [imdb 6.9]
Morocoo – ‘A Mile In My Shoes’ – [imdb 7.9]
None of the above movies above got a Nomination.
The Last African film to be nominated for an Academy Award was Mauritania’s ‘Timbuktu’ in 2014. Since then, Arican films have failed to grab even a nomination.

Does all this mean that African cinema has to try harder? or should we just be satisfied with our own Awards? Please share your thoughts.
