The shortlist of the 2016 Andre Simon Food and Drink Book Awards has been announced and Yemisi Aribisala’s Longthroat Memoirs: Sopus, Sex and Nigerian Taste Buds is named in the Food Category.
The Andre Simon’s Award is a 2000 pounds prize that goes to the best gastronomic literature. Congrats to Aribisala for making the shortlist. But we are not surprised at all.
The collection of essays, published by Cassava Republic on October 31, is a celebration of Nigerian delicacies and culinary culture. It’s a must-read, which is why we’ve spent the entire year telling wonderful things about it. Remember when we gushed over the amazing cover [read here]? Before that, we told you about her delicious essay on pepper. In November, we were also hosted the first stop on her week-long blog tour and had a wonderful time talking about Nigerian food. Clearly, we’ve always loved Aribisala’s book. It’s just so nice that the world is taking notice. We can assure you that this shortlist will be the first of many!
On the shortlist, also, are: Felicity Cloake’s The A-Z of Eating, Ruby Tandoh’s Flavour: Eat What You Love, Meera Sodha’s Fresh India, Gill Meller’s Gather, Fuchsia Dunlop’s Land of Fish and Rice, Regula Ysewijn’s Pride and Pudding, and The Oxford Companion to Cheese, edited by Catherine Donnelly.
