‘Lutteur’ – Portrait Of A Senegalese Wrestler By Ernst Coppejans

 

In Senegal, wrestling is one of the most popular sport, with young boys training fervently in the hopes that one day they’ll be at the top. Photographer Ernst Coppejans accompanied a group of young men from a village called Yene who gather on the beach to train everyday. Their bodies, the sand, the sunlight reflecting off the water–such a beautiful and serene juxtaposition to the intensity and forcefulness of their practice.

On the project, he says;

Wrestling is the number one sport in Senegal. Champions are worshiped and treated like movie stars. Many Senegalese boys train fanatically to make their dream, becoming a famous lutteur (wrestler) come true. During a month i portrayed boys from the small village (of) Yene who gather on the beach, everyday at the end of the afternoon, to train together
