Performance Artist Jelili Atiku Is Running For President in 2019.
Jelili Atiku, one of Nigeria’s foremost and most visible performance artist, recently declared his intention to run for the position of President of the federal republic of Nigeria come general elections in 2019.
Jelili Atiku is renowned in art circles globally for his outspoken and outlandish performance art, usually targeted at government and social injustice. In 2015, he won the Prince Claus Laureate, an award created by the Dutch Government in 1997 to honor individuals and organizations reflecting a progressive and contemporary approach to the themes of culture and development. In 2016, Jelili along with 5 other people were arrested by the Nigerian Police as a result of one his performances which caused a major stir in his community in Lagos state. He was later released after considerable pressure from family, friends and the art community.
His decision to run for presidency under the ‘People’s Welfare party’ comes as a surprise even as he has been very vocal about his political views. Nigerian politics is not known for welcoming ‘outsiders’ but in a post-Buhari, post-Trump world, is anything really still possible?
