Very few remember when Jazz Music was the real deal in Nigeria. Even fewer remember that Jazz, inadvertently birthed the Hi-Life and Afrobeat music revolutions that took over the African continent in the 60’s and 70’s. Led by the likes of Bobby Benson, Tunde Amuwo, Bob Edwards, Willy Payne and Soji Lijadu, and Fela Kuti – these men experimented with various genres to create something unique to Nigeria and indeed Africa. Those unique combinations – Hi-life, and Afrobeat – eventually became the sound of the continent.
A similar experimentation is happening today with multitalented instrumentalists like Femi Leye, who are blending contemporary Nigerian beats with the classic charm of old school Jazz.
They’re calling it Afro-Jazz and Femi Leye, who just launched his 10 track Album titled ‘Ekaabo’, is at the forefront of this music revolution. Based in Lagos, Femi Leye has featured at various concerts and events home and abroad. Working with musicians from various backgrounds like the Grammy Award Winning Senegalese Born Musician Yossuff Ndour, music producer Don Jazzy, Ice Prince, Iyanya, Dr Sid, Tiwa Savage, Korede Bello, Wizboyy, Dija and many others.
