It’s Valentine weekend and at least for a day, it seems, the whole world is in love. The air is laden with romantic messages and the stores are filled with red and white teddy bears and boxes of chocolate for all the lovebirds out there. While much focus is on romantic love, we shine our lights on something more particular: Self Love.
The Love Of Self, like many believe is not about Selfishness, and it isn’t about taking yourself so seriously that other people do not matter. And it’s definitely not about about the Me-First, entitled attitude thats usually promoted by many ‘Motivational’ speakers. It’s not about being self-absorbed or narcissistic, it’s about getting in touch with ourselves, our well-being and our happiness.
Simply put, Self-Love is about confidence and dignity. Self-love is important because it lets us push through our limiting beliefs and live a life that truly shines.
And who better to discuss this with other than a Photographer. Pro photographers are skilled at building self-confidence, especially with shy subjects who are not used to being the focus of the lens and even professional models who are incredibly insecure about how they look.
We speak with Sunmisola Olorunisola, a pro photog, who lives and works in Lagos, Nigeria and who has perfected the art of convincing models, including walk-ins to take photos without their clothes on.
“What Matters the most, the koko, is the mind. It’s all in the mind.”
Sunmisola’s photos capture women in their most intimate and vulnerable states. Asked about what factors contribute to self-confidence. “Beauty cannot be defined. It is what you see it as. Don’t let any of those magazines make you feel like your body isn’t perfect. Even those models don’t look like that in real life.” What helps one build self-confidence?
“Courage. Goodness. And Financial Independence.”
Asked about his own motivations, Sunmisola is straightforward.
“What motivates me? The Female Body.”
